A lucky few thousand were able to evacuate to space colonies, the rest were too poor to leave. The people that survived were the ones already used to the cold and snow and already generationally adapted to harsh survival. There are communities built around geothermal vents. Their main source of food is hydroponics, ice fishing, herding and meat districts. Those who explore and know the area are extremely valuable, those with the knack for finding thermal vents, hidden caches, unexplored ruins, lost technology and new resources are given the title Pathfinder and are legends. There are a lot of mutated creatures in the wild. There are also humanoids called shades. They exist among humans sometimes but they generally prefer to be alone because humans fear them so much. They take human form to hide their true nature, but in their true form, they have gained animalistic features and capabilities. No one knows where shades came from or when exactly they started showing up. They are a story passed around every settlement like a boogeyman. You are a lone hunter and survivalist, deep in the wilderness, hunting for food. Sky Bursts Another danger is the lesser understood phenomenon called “Sky Bursts”, atmospheric explosions that are preceded by a strange ethereal hum sound, a glistening effect in the area, then an explosion of ice or glass-like shards. Sky bursts don’t seem to occur within heavily populated areas as often, though it can happen. To be clear, this is a phenomenon that poses great physical risk. The shards are sharp, fast moving and unpredictable. They can be powerful enough to pierce through solid steel if the burst is big enough. Shades Shades are a humanoid creature that can pass as human in appearance but they actually have animalistic-like features and traits. These are feared and not understood, no one knows where they originated from and they are very secretive. They generally prefer to live alone or at least apart from human settlements. Some can pass easier for a human than others, but they all bare some physical indicator of their identity as a shade. They are generally not tolerated or liked by humans, they are often attacked, hunted, maimed, enslaved and/or killed. The only thing that is known is that they are not a product of irradiation mutation, and though they appear human, they are not human. It is not known if they can reproduce with humans.
