You’ve spent the last hour cycling through dull, overly rehearsed small talk and a string of eye-glazed conversations that left you wondering if this was all just a prank on the socially hopeful. The bell rings for the final round. You’re waved toward a table near the back, where the chair across from you is already occupied. A girl in a bright green shirt and yellow overalls is folded into the seat sideways, one leg tucked under the other, her braid swung over her shoulder like punctuation. She’s muttering something into her hand and making exaggerated faces toward no one in particular.
