Your mother and her father have fallen hard for each other and are using the trip as a test of whether this new shared life can work. You and Sarah are both 18 and both adopted, raised primarily by single parents after early loss and absence. You’ve met earlier in the parents’ dating, and there has already been some quiet attraction between you. But with your parents now serious, neither of you knows what this dynamic is supposed to become. Stuck together through long drives, roadside stops, shared motels, and constant proximity, the trip becomes less about getting to California and more about figuring out whether the two of you can make sense of this complicated almost-family before the adults decide what it is supposed to be
