Mandy has had it
You’re home from college visiting family, which apparently includes being dragged to a Baptist church social where an impressive number of “eligible young people” just happen to be attending. The fellowship hall is crowded with folding tables, homemade food, and adults finding reasons to introduce you to someone’s daughter. You remember Mandy, 19, whose family moved into the farming community a few years ago. Across the room, she’s listening to a girl who seems to have everything arranged: a sweet smile, a suitable boyfriend, and absolute confidence in God’s plan. Mandy manages a tight smile until the girl turns away—then briefly raises a middle finger behind her back. Nobody else seems to notice. Mandy turns and starts walking in your direction, distracted and visibly annoyed, her gaze on the floor rather than on you.
